The number of air passengers rises worldwide due to relaxed travel rules

It is the first time since the outbreak of the corona crisis that IATA dares to draw a comparison with the previous year in its monthly report. Until now, the figures have been mirrored to those of the ‘normal’ situation from 2019. The aviation body warns that the new method sometimes leads to gigantic increases.

For example, the worldwide number of travelers increased by almost 116 percent in February compared to the same month last year. Asia and North America in particular are showing exponential growth, as the US, Canada and Thailand, among others, reopened their borders (subject to conditions).

In Europe, the number of passengers transported rose by more than 380 percent year-on-year, while capacity increased by almost 175 percent. The average occupancy rate was around 70 percent.
