First European The ETF was launched in Germany in 2000, seven years after the United States. In the early years, these assets in European exchange-traded funds were very low.
It took the EU ETF industry 16 years to raise its first €500 billion in assets under management. Then things went much faster, and it only took another five years for the capital to double to a trillion euros.
The chart below shows the assets under management, i.e. volumes under management or assets in European exchange-traded funds, in the European ETF industry (2000 – 2022, billions of euros).
