In terms of passenger traffic, March was the best month of 2022 so far for Brussels Airport. The huge improvement compared to March 2021 is due to the fact that there was still a ban on non-essential travel in Belgium at the time, as a result of which Brussels Airport welcomed only 187,000 passengers in that month.
The ten most popular destinations last month were Madrid, Barcelona, Lisbon, Rome, Geneva, Milan, Istanbul, Malaga, Dubai and London. The Easter holidays had no impact on the March figures as the holiday exodus only started on Friday 1 April.
The share of transfer travelers was 14 percent in March. That is four percentage points lower than in 2019, according to the airport, due to the strong increase in local outbound traffic and the decrease in the number of transfers between European destinations.
In March, total freight transport at Brussels Airport decreased by three percent compared to March 2021. This decrease is due to a thirteen percent decrease in trucked freight. However, the air freight volume amounted to +0.1 percent.
The amount of cargo arriving and departing by full freighters decreased by ten percent compared to March 2021, while cargo on board passenger aircraft increased by 81.4 percent.
